As part of our 2020-21 Learning Recovery work, Zearn offers an upfront diagnostic unit for each grade. Zearn Math’s approach to a diagnostic is centered around collecting multiple data points on student performance to diagnose unfinished learning from last year, particularly during school closures. Rather than start the year with a one-time test, Zearn starts with a first diagnostic Mission, which provides 1-2 weeks of daily lesson-level diagnostic data. This creates a more comprehensive and accurate picture of where students are struggling and may need more support as it incorporates the full range of instruction including fluency, conceptual understanding, and problem solving.
The diagnostic is embedded within the first mission of our learning recovery sequences. It is available to all teacher accounts. You can access all our learning recovery sequences, here. To set students to the diagnostic Mission, follow the instructions below:
- Log in to your Zearn account and click Roster at the top of your Zearn homepage
- Choose the class that contains the students whose assignment you'll be updating
- Select the student(s) whose assignment you’d like to change by clicking the check box next to their name(s)
- Click Change Lesson
- In the pop-up, select the Grade and Mission for the diagnostic Mission. Note you may need to change the grade in the drop down to access the appropriate Mission.
**Students will work through the diagnostic mission as they would a regular mission. There is no notation of this in the student experience.
**Students will automatically progress through our traditional scope and sequence. Teachers can adjust the assignment to follow the learning recovery sequences.
**For students who struggle in the diagnostic Mission, teachers can leverage the additional lessons both in that diagnostic Mission as well as foundational content from prior grades to support areas of unfinished learning.
