Zearn Math for Kindergarten is a full curriculum designed to build strong math foundations and be developmentally appropriate for young students.
Curricular Materials:
Zearn Math for K curricular materials includes resources for daily teacher-led instruction, Digital Activities, Assessments, and Reports. All materials are available through Zearn Teacher Accounts.
- Teacher Materials: Each day with Zearn Math, kindergarteners spend most of their time learning with their teacher and peers during teacher-led instruction. Zearn Math offers comprehensive materials for teachers to use during this time covering all six Missions of the curriculum. Materials for each Mission include fluency, word problems, lessons, paper exit tickets*. Teachers also have access to a Guide to Using Digital Activities that includes information on the instructional purpose of each type of Digital Activity, questions to support student understanding, instructional “look-fors”, and recommendations on additional means of representation that can be used to support students who are struggling with a concept. This guide can be accessed through a teacher account by going to the Kindergarten Overview page.
- Problem Sets: Students work through Paper Problem Sets to independently solve problems, using a range of strategies in a variety of contexts. Students are encouraged to choose their own strategy and/or representation as appropriate. Teachers circulate during this time to provide feedback on different strategies and use the Notes in the Lesson to support students who may need further scaffolding with a concrete manipulative or an alternative representation.
- Digital Activities: Digital Activities are short, engaging, activities designed to develop kindergarteners’ number sense. Activities follow an intentional progression, starting with Numbers to 5 and building to Numbers to 10, Numbers to 15, and Numbers to 20. After completing the progression, students should revisit activities for additional practice while continuing to learn the full Zearn Math for K curriculum with their class.
- Assessments: Zearn Math for K includes Mid- and End-of-Mission assessments, formative assessments administered roughly halfway through the Mission and at the conclusion of the Mission respectively. These paper-based assessments are intended to be administered interview style, where teachers record their observations of the student’s work and thinking. Read our Approach to Assessments to learn more.
- Reports: Teachers can access an Activity Tracker showing how far along K students are in the sequence of Digital Activities.
Classroom Model: Daily and Weekly Schedule
Every day, teachers spend 30-45 minutes leading Fluency, Word Problems and Lessons drawn from Teacher Materials. During this time, students build deep understanding of new math ideas by working with concrete manipulatives, drawing pictorial representations, and engaging in back-and-forth math discussions. After Teacher-Led Instruction, students split into two activity groups to practice their learning and strengthen number sense. Half the class works through Digital Activities while the other half works on Paper Problem Sets. After 10 minutes, the two groups rotate.
